G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program Frequently Asked Questions

1) Are all undergraduates eligible for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
You must be pursuing your first undergraduate degree to be a part of the Promise program. Candidates must be eligible to apply for and receive federal student financial aid; classified as a legal resident of Georgia for tuition assessment purposes; and designated as a "dependent" of parent(s) who:

  • have less than $33,300 in total annual income and/or benefits; and
  • are eligible to file an IRS Form 1040A or 1040EZ for the most recent tax year.

2) How do I apply for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
Candidates will be selected from those students who submit and complete an application for financial aid through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid by the designated application deadline. Applicants for student financial aid must file a FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid) as well as the GT Application for Financial Aid and Scholarships to be considered for this or any other "need-based" program. While a separate application is not required specifically for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program, additional information and documentation may be required for any student selected as a candidate.

3) When is the deadline to be considered a candidate for G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
The financial aid application deadline for students entering as freshmen for Fall Semester is March 1. For all other undergraduates (renewal Tech Promise and entering transfer students) the financial aid application deadline is May 1. Being an on-time applicant also means being accepted for admission to the Institute by the application deadline.

4) What happens if I do not meet the application deadline?
Only students meeting the financial aid application deadline will be considered candidates for this program. Recipients are selected and named prior to the beginning of the academic year, and mid-year awards and/or renewals will not be considered. Late applicants may apply for other financial aid and scholarships. Application procedures are available at www.finaid.gatech.edu/apply.

5) Do I have to provide my parental financial information to be a candidate for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
Yes. Parental income and asset information will be required to determine eligibility for G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program.

6) When will I know if I have been selected as a recipient of the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
Recipients will be selected and award notifications will be mailed to each entering freshman candidate in early April. Renewal Tech Promise students and entering transfer students selected to participate—will be notified in late June.

7) How many semesters of financial assistance can I receive from the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
Qualified recipients entering Georgia Tech as freshmen may receive funding from the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program during the first eight (8) semesters of full-time enrollment. For students entering as transfers, term eligibility will be individually assessed (maximum of six terms).

8) Do I have to reapply each year?
Yes, eligibility is evaluated for each academic year. Students must apply for student financial aid by the designated deadline and provide all requested documentation to be considered for awards in subsequent years.

9) Do I have to keep a certain GPA to qualify for Tech Promise?
Yes, recipients of Tech Promise are expected to achieve and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, be considered in "good standing" by the Office of the Registrar, and meet and maintain the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Eligibility will be monitored and, if necessary, awards/eligibility adjusted at the end of each semester.

10) Can I regain eligibility for the program mid-year if my GPA goes back up to a 2.0 or better?
No, recipients are selected and named prior to the beginning of the academic year; mid year awards and/or renewals will not be considered.

11) Do I have to be a full-time student to remain eligible for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
Yes, full-time enrollment is defined as at least twelve credit hours of attempted course work for credit toward the recipient's first undergraduate degree.

12) Are G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program recipients required to participate in the Federal Work Study Program?
No, recipients will not be required to participate in the Federal Work Study program, but each recipient will be offered funding from the Federal Work Study (FWS) program and provided the opportunity to earn up to $1,250 per semester toward meeting the student's financial need not covered by scholarships and grants.

13) What expenses will the program cover?
Awards from the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program will be combined with other scholarships, grants, and a Federal Work Study job opportunity to meet the student's financial need associated with the cost of full-time resident tuition, mandatory fees, an allowance for books, and on-campus housing and meal plan.

14) Who will select the recipients for the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will select recipients and administer the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program. The Director of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will serve as the final authority for the selection of candidates and the level of support provided to each recipient.

15) Will I have to repay the financial assistance that I receive through the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program?
No, the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program awards are considered scholarships and do not require repayment.

16) Who do I contact for more information?
The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid administers the G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Program.
